Commercial
A great commercial demo highlights your skill level when it comes to selling a product, service, concept or yourself. The art of voice acting truly begins with the all important, versatile demo. Know the rules and what casting directors, agents and clients expect from your demo.




Narration
A great narration demo will highlight your storytelling skills and your ability to transport an audience to another place and time. Theater of the mind is very important but only when voiced, produced and presented properly.



Radio Imaging / TV Promo
The radio imaging demo is one of the most technically specific demos. It requires industry specific expertise with regard to performance, direction and production. Radio station managers will sniff out a fake demo in a heartbeat and reject a demo created by someone without the required radio specific knowledge. Like the radio demo, the TV promo demo must be authentic sounding. Demos must accurately represent current trends, sounds and styles of TV. If it's off, decision makers will pass on your demo simply because it's not believable.


This list can help you determine if you are READY to begin demo production:
  ~ Are you an experienced voice actor with more than 5 yrs experience in the industry?
  ~ Have you worked with a vocal coach before?
  ~ Have you trained specifically in preparation for the type of demo you wish to create?
  ~ Have you had a demo created for you previously?
  ~ Do you have a professional grade studio that has been evaluated for recording quality?
  ~ Are you capable of recording yourself without the assistance of others?
  ~ Are you able to interpret a script and decide on a manner of delivery without direction?
  ~ Are you familiar with basic VO techniques that allow producers to create smooth edits?
  ~ Are you able to commit to a performance and stay in character for its duration?
  ~ Do you understand the importance of your demo, as it directly relates to whether or not you will book VO work in the future?

"When I attended the Voice 2010 conference in Los Angeles, I was fortunate to win a fully-produced voice-over demo in a drawing from VOCareer.com. Since a professionally produced demo is essential to a serious voice talent, I was thrilled to have this opportunity.
My previous, self-produced commercial demo  had got me some bookings and wasn’t terrible, but as I had no direction and no professional sound engineer to put it together, there was tons of room for improvement. Gabrielle Nistico, vice president of VOCareer.com and operations director of VoiceHunter.com, started with the same set of scripts I had used for my original demo and showed me how carefully crafted reads and skillful use of music, effects and ambience could turn an ordinary recording into something special.
The recording was done in my home studio, where I first did some acoustical tweaking to make sure it was up to the job.  Gabrielle adapted the scripts, breaking them down into demo-friendly bits, then connected with me through a phone patch for the session.
She was patient but persistent, pushing me to find a more natural read, a different interpretation, a new attitude toward a character. She remained cheerful when planes flew over and disrupted a take, or the cat walked in and added her own comments. Through it all, Gabrielle directed me in a firm, constructive way that was stern but never felt abusive. I could feel that she truly wanted me to do well, and that relaxed me and made it fun, as it should be.
I used ftp to send the very large, unedited audio file to Gabrielle, and after a few days, she sent back a fully produced commercial demo. With her help, the quality of my reads had improved dramatically, and she had created an environment for each spot using music, effects, and ambient sound. Though the scripts were the same, the result couldn’t have been more different.
We had a discussion about the processing of some of the material, and she listened to my opinions and made a few changes.  In the end, we were both very pleased with the finished product.
